Overview

The alternative route to reaching Everest Base Camp other than Lukla is through Phaplu. One of the advantages of approaching Phaplu is that it is less crowded than Lukla and both air connection and land transportation are available for tourists.

Like Lukla, Phaplu is another town in Everest region located northwest of Lukla. It will take 35 minutes to fly to Phaplu Airport from Kathmandu. You will begin your trekking from Phaplu airport into oak and rhododendron forests and pass the Takshindo Gompa. Along the way you will come across a cheese factory and beautiful scenic settlements of Sherpa and Rai communities.

On this part of the trail, you will be able to see snowcapped peaks such as Numbu (6960m.), Cho-oyu (8201m.), Gyangchung Kang (7922m.) and Thamserku (6629m.).

Once you reach Lukla, you will traverse the normal route along the Dudhakoshi River towards Phakding and then on to Namche Bazaar. The views of Everest will be visible before you reach Namche.

Namche is renowned as the capital of Sherpa people. Namche is chock-a-bloc with modern hotels and traditional monasteries, sleek restaurants and superb scenery. A day’s trek will take you to Tengboche monastery, one of the biggest Buddhist monasteries in the Himalayas. You will have ample opportunities to appreciate the beauty of Himalayan peaks from here including the majestic Ama Dablam.

Our next point of interest would be Kalapathhar (5545m). It takes about 3 hours to reach the top of Kalapatthar from Gorakshep and it is all worth it. Kalapatthar affords a spectacular view of Everest, Nuptse, Island Peak etc. Reaching Everest Base camp is another adventure as you will walk through glaciers and rocks and see Everest up close and personal.
