Highlights

Overview

Cho Oyu Expedition (8201m) is the easiest in the club of 8000m mountains to climb. The first attempt to reach its peak was made by a British team comprising Eric Shipton, Edmund Hillary and Tom Bourdillon, which had to be abandoned due to ‘technical difficulties and danger of avalanche’. Two years later an Austrian expedition team led by Herbert Tichy, Joseph Jöchler and Pasang Dawa Lama successfully scaled the peak.

Cho Oyu lies in the Khumbu subsection of the Mahalangur Himal and at 8201m is the sixth highest mountain in the world. It is at a distance of 20 km from Everest and Lhotse and straddles along the Nepal-Tibet border. Cho Oyu is a Tibetan name which literally translates into ‘Turquoise Goddess’.

Cho Oyu has long been revered and respected by Khumbu people as well as Tibetans. In fact Nangpa La pass near Cho Oyu used to be an ancient trading route between Sherpas of Khumbu and Tibetans.
